Got this excellent post from Angela at Happy Fit Mama in my inbox this morning and loved it. I’m still waiting for my MRI to confirm whether or not I have any torn ligaments around my right knee. No matter what, physical therapy starts a week from today. I’m staying active with swimming, weight lifting and yoga, but am starting to get the itch to sign up for more spring races. Registration will have to wait for now (my bank account is secretly thanking me), but in the mean time, here’s a little insight on my runner’s brain.
#1. Would you rather run in a thunderstorm or a snowstorm?
Snowstorm all the way. I have only run through one thunderstorm in my life and it was terrifying. I was less than a mile from home and the lightning was beautiful, but enough to send me sprinting for my door. Snow, on the other hand, is soft and peaceful. There is nothing quite like trail running in the winter. Here in Northeast Ohio, you’re likely to see deer, cardinals, and wild turkeys. Add in the quiet that comes from a blanket of fresh snow and you’ve got some of the most beautiful running you’ll ever do.
#2. Would you rather breathe through your nose or breathe through your mouth?
Nose, but I lapse in to mouth breathing all too often. My recent adventures in yoga have made me more focused on my breath and I’m hoping to bring some of that focus to my running this year.
#3. Would you rather do 100 squats or 100 crunches?
Crunches. My abs always need the help.
#4. Would you rather have a baked good for dessert or an extra serving of your favorite entree?
This is a toss up. I have a problem with cake, but if we’re talking my mom’s spaghetti & meatballs, I’m going for the pasta.
#5. Would you rather run on a treadmill for an hour or run around the same street block for an hour?
Same block. I’ve done it before. When I need to run long, but stay close to home, I loop around the same 1.3 mile circle near my house. I can keep a water supply at the end of my driveway and have a (non-public!) restroom close at hand. It’s not so bad. Treadmills make me feel trapped and I have to put my focus on TV or music to survive.
#6. Would you rather have a headache during a run or a side stitch?
As a migraine sufferer, I’ve run with headaches before. It’s awful. All too often, my pain is only elevated when I’m done. I’ll take side stitches.
#7. Would you rather have a rest day on a work day or a day off?
During the school year, I like to make my rest days Wednesdays. Something to look forward to in the middle of the week when I’m usually feeling tired or need an extra hour or two at night to catch up on paperwork. During the summer, I like to have Saturdays or Sundays with no workout scheduled so I can enjoy more time at the beach or with Phil and the kids.
#8. Would you rather be a race director or a race volunteer?
No lie, I’d love to RD someday. Fits my type A, hyper-organized personality.
#9. Would you rather spend your money on running gadgets [HRM, GPS watch, Headphones] or running shoes?
Shoes. I love my Garmin and have had the same trusty model for years. I’d rather have the money to buy and try different kinds of shoes.
#10. Would you rather run in a relay or do the run portion of a distance triathlon?
Relay! The run portion of the triathlon is usually last, so I can’t imagine that pressure. I’m no jack rabbit when it comes to speed, so I’d like to be a in a relay and leave the final leg to someone else!
Your turn! Answer all or some of the questions or link up to your blog if you’d like. Happy Running!
