My 40 Days to Personal Revolution yoga practice is at it’s half-way point and this past weekend I got to celebrate by participating in a beautiful event in Cleveland. Believe in CLE is a group founded recently and trying to build community and raise awareness about Cleveland and its growing spirit. Their first (free!) event was hosted on the walkways surrounding the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum this past summer. I heard about that event through Facebook and was hoping I could join in the next one. I was thrilled when the group announced their plans to host another free event at the Cleveland Museum of Art and signed myself (and my dear husband) up right away.
Nearly 800 yogis brought their mats to the atrium of the newly renovated museum this past Saturday and it was beautiful. I have a love affair with this museum to begin with. Free and home to amazing works of art, the museum has recently undergone sweeping renovations and the outcomes have been revealed slowly. Our family visits regularly to wander, sit and stare at our favorites and enjoy the rotating exhibitions. A recent favorite has been the 12 animals of the Chinese New Year by Ai Weiwei.
Phil and I arrived and ran in to fellow Cleveland blogger, Katie O. and set up our mats near hers. We took some photos, listened to great pre-event music and settled in for the 75 minute practice. Local news anchor Denise Dufala gave a keynote speech and talked about the joy she found on the mat. I identified with the emotions she shared about her practice and the way that it has changed the rest of her life-specifically, her coming home after her first class and announcing that she was going “to do this all the time!”
I got to sample a new electrolyte drink in the lobby before the session began. This stuff was amazing-Mint Cocoa flavor was my favorite. Phil took one drink of mine and ran back to the table to get his own. Look out for Nooma in Cleveland stores soon – and an upcoming giveaway on my blog!
The event began and included an invigorating practice and Phil and I were warmed up in no time. A huge group of assistants, including Alicia from Poise in Parma, circulated throughout the crowd. The hands-on help I received was great-it was wonderful to get assistance in a crowd so large. A live vocalist sang a rendition of “I’m So Tired” during our meditation at the end of the practice that was moving and calming at the same time. The evening ended with more great music from DJ Michael Franti and Phil and I reluctantly rolled up our mats and headed home, tired but energized from such a great experience.
If you’re in the Cleveland area, I hope you’ll join me at the next event hosted by Believe in CLE. If you’re not-think about the joy you could bring to your city with an event like this-dream big and believe!
