Day 14 of the Spending Freeze Challenge – Love Your Library

I’m wrapping up a week of entertainment spending talk with my favorite recommendation – mining your local library. I’ve said this before, I need two people in the world to know my name – my bartender and my librarian. And I don’t drink very often, so, honestly, it’s just my librarian. Nerd nation unite!

My current reading selection - great book!

Our local library branches have always been our go-to for free entertainment and resources. My children have grown up hunting down new titles on the shelf and just recently graduated from the children’s area of the building to the young adult area. I swear that we were at Toddler Story Time about five minutes ago, but the years are slipping by quickly. Here are some ways your library can come in handy during your spending freeze:

  • Challenge yourself this month to read one or two works that have been on your list – maybe one fiction and one non-fiction? I have odd genres that I enjoy (Norweigian murder mysteries are amazing), but when I need some “candy for my brain” I head to Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series. The lead character is self-deprecating, bold and great at being a representation of Every Woman.
  • Pick up a cookbook to help you with your at home meal planning and cooking.
  • Head in to the DVD area and grab a few movies for a family movie night.
  • Sign the kids up for a free program. My daughter heads to the library tomorrow night to meet a YA fiction author and hear her speak about writing. Story time is another great way to help your young children socialize and be exposed to literature.
  • Check out your library’s digital options – we can now download books to our Kindles, borrow music, movies and TV shows, all through the library’s website. Our library is using the new app, Hoopla, for some of these electronic options. Check it out!
  • Join a library book club. Check out your library for options – but these clubs usually meet once a month and are also free. Great way to meet new people.
  • Have a valuable skill? Offer to teach a class at your local library and get free business exposure while helping your community!
