We’re continuing our focus on exercise spending this week and I’m sharing some ideas on the cheapest and easiest form of exercise I know – walking. If you’re cutting back your exercise spending this month, then giving yourself time to walk each day is a great way to improve your fitness and save money at the same time. Here are my cheap and easy suggestions for getting started:
- Set a goal for yourself for the week or day. A pedometer is a great way to keep track of how many steps you’re already taking each day and then try to add a certain number each day or week. 10,000 steps a day is a great target and can have great improvements on your health. Check out this article that explains why.
- Involve the family. I swear that my children always slept better after I walked them around the block. Something about the fresh air and being outside for a bit made them just that much sleepier. Have a dog that could use some more exercise? Add one short walk for them to your day.
- Avoid injury by wearing the best athletic shoes you have while you walk. It may be tempting to head out the door in flip-flops, but your feet will hate you for it later.
- Create your own free challenge as a family. Invite friends and relatives to join you in an imaginary trek across the Oregon Trail. The trail was 2,000 miles long. On average, a mile is about 2,000 steps or so. Ask everyone to track their steps for the month and award a gift or prize to whomever comes the closest to the end of the trail.
