Greater Cleveland Triathlon Training Weeks 3 & 4

Once upon a time, I had a blog. That I updated. On the regular. I’m going to get back on that track. I promise. But, for now, I’m going to focus on making it through the last 7 work days at my current teaching job. The end of the year brings a flurry (sure, I’ll use that word here, Polar Vortex be damned) of paperwork, double and triple checking documents, grades, book lists, and cleaning. This year I’ll add in the element of needing to pack up 7 years worth of materials and moving schools. Packing up so far has included me finding a copy of a ten page paper I wrote for my Islamic Civilizations course in the fall of 2003. Yea, it might be time to go ahead and cut the cord to some of the stuff in my file cabinet. I’m not going to “need” that annotated bibliography from the paper I wrote on Norwegian education. The recycle bin calls.

The past two weeks have been tough. I began week three of triathlon training feeling strong and having had some success in the pool. I swam on Tuesday, May 20th (1000 yards) and then got hit with what I’ll call the strep/sinus/upper respiratory infection of the year. On an annual basis, my body shuts down at the end of May. It would be foolish of me to look for reasons why – I’m a teacher and May is a high-stress month. Special education paperwork multiplies exponentially at the end of the year and every child starts to get spring fever. Add in the recent decision to sell our house (more on that soon) and I created the perfect storm.

I dragged myself in to the doctor on Thursday and begged for a penicillin shot, which they gave me. I felt slightly better Friday, but had committed to holding my Team in Training MASSIVE fundraising garage sale Saturday. With no voice and the feeling that I had been hit by an 18 wheeler, I got started on setting up all the donations I had received. My family, bless them all, rallied with me and helped with set up, hanging clothes, pricing items and hanging up signs. Saturday rolled around and the weather was beautiful. I lined the driveway with donations from 8 different families and put out a table of my own homemade cookies to sell. I’m thrilled to say that we not only met my fundraising goal, but surpassed it by $200. So far, I’ve raised about $1700 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society! I just mailed off $240 to add to my online total and am feeling so grateful for the help and generosity of so many, many people.

I got back to training on Memorial Day and I’ve enjoyed beautiful weather this week and a good return to the work of triathlon training. I’m loving the new shoes I picked up from Skora Running. I was looking for a more minimalist shoe and am working on getting back to a solid cadence and form in the hopes of avoiding injury. 5/27: Rest

5/28: KettleĀ Bell = 45 minutes

5/29: Biking = 12 miles

5/30: Kettle Bell = 45 minutes, Running = 4 miles

5/31: Biking = 11.25 miles/Running = 1.5 miles Brick

6/1: Swimming = 700 yards
